“Where and How to Find Available Jobs”

I. “Until you accept a job, finding one should be your full-time job.”

1. Advertised Openings

First, you should be aware that advertised openings only reflect about 15% of all jobs filled (according to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics). So, while you can’t simply rely on the help-wanted ads to find a job, you still should read them – at least once a week (on Sunday).

2. Recruiters

Since most recruiters earn their fees from (and therefore owe their allegiance to) the employers they recruit for, how can you get them to work to your benefit?

3. Direct Company Contacts

Why, you may ask, should one contact a company that is not advertising a job opening? The simple answer is that according to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, 80-to-85% of all job openings are not filled through employment advertising.

In addition, since just about anyone has access to the want ads, you stand to have the most competition from other job seekers when you simply answer job advertisements.

4. Networking

Networking is a resource that if done well can prove to be a very effective contact in a job seekers campaign. A variety of job search resources are the key to an effective campaign, therefore let us review some pointers on how to network effectively.

5. Special Opportunities

The final resource that will be given in implementing both a balanced and more importantly an effective career campaign is how to identify what we call “special job opportunities.”

II. “Use them all and, . . . you too can find the job you seek.”

“The more contacts you make, the more likely you are to uncover an opportunity”
